National Sports Development Code of India (NSDCI)

Recently the Delhi High Court has asked the central government to stop funding sports bodies that do not comply with the National Sports Development Code of India (NSDCI).

The order barred the Center from granting, funding and patronizing National Sports Federations (NSFs) that are not complying with the NSDCI, 2011.

In the year 2014, the Delhi High Court declared the NSDCI as the Law of the Land for sports bodies. NSDCI is a set of orders issued by the Government of India since the year 1975 for the National Sports Federations.

NSDC defines the areas of responsibility of different agencies involved in the promotion and development of sports.

It identifies eligible NSFs for coverage under the Code. Also, sets their priorities. It details the procedures to be followed by the Federation.

It describes the eligibility conditions for receiving government recognition and grants.

The NSFs are solely responsible and accountable for the overall management, direction, control, regulation, promotion, development and sponsorship of the discipline. On these grounds they are recognized by the concerned international association.

Benefits of NSDC Compliance:

  • NSFs ensure fairness, and bring legitimacy;
  • Helps in resolving issues of mismanagement of the sports sector;
  • Get better results in sports etc.

Key concerns of NSFs:

  • Lack of quality sports infrastructure.
  • There is a lack of transparency and accountability.
  • Qualification is lacking, as the head of the federation is the politician.
  • Facing lack of funds.
  • Conflicts of interest are often seen between the members of the unions.
