National Science Day (NSD) 2023

National Science Day (NSD) 2023 has been celebrated across the country on 28 February. National Science Day is being celebrated every year since 1986.

  • The theme of National Science Day, 2023 is “Global Science for Global Wellbeing”.
  • It may be noted that in the year 1928, on February 28 itself, Nobel laureate physicist CV Raman had announced the discovery of the Raman effect.
  • The Raman effect is also called Raman scattering. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
  • He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in the year 1954. He was the first Asian and the first black person to receive the Nobel Prize in Science.
  • The Raman’s effect refers to the change in wavelength of light. This change occurs after the light beam is deflected by the molecules.
  • When a ray of light passes through a dust-free and transparent medium of a chemical compound, a small fraction of the light is scattered in directions other than the direct direction of the incoming (incident) ray.
  • The majority of this scattered light is of unchanged wavelength. However, a small portion has a wavelength different from that of the incident light. This is due to the Raman effect phenomenon.

Importance of Raman effect-

  • Raman spectroscopy is used to identify and analyze the chemical composition of a substance.
  • This is important for quantum theory.
  • It is used in remote sensing and planetary exploration.

Other Contributions of C.V. Raman:

  • The Indian Journal of Physics was started in 1926.
  • The Raman Research Institute was established in Bangalore in 1948.
