National Road Safety Month

Statistics of road accidents in the report released by the Ministry of Transport and Highways : According to the report released by the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, India accounted for 11 percent of the total 13.5 lakh deaths on roads globally in 2019.

According to the report, India ranks first in road accident deaths. In India, 1,51,113 people died in road accidents in 2019. At the same time, China is at second place with 63,093 deaths.

With 1,463 deaths, the national capital Delhi ranks first followed by Jaipur, Chennai, Bangalore and Kanpur with the highest figures.

Talking about the states, in 2019, 22,655 people lost their lives in road accidents in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 15 percent of the nationwide deaths.

Efforts made by the Government:

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has taken several notable steps to improve road safety so far :

The Ministry has outlined various policy measures under the National Road Safety Policy, including promotion of awareness, establishment of road safety information database, promotion of infrastructure for safe roads and enforcement of safety laws etc.

Under “Road Safety Week”, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, take some measures such as,  broadcasting on Door darshan and radio, distribution of materials of road safety,  advertisement in newspapers and seminars, conferences and organizing workshops to ensure road safety.

With a view to spreading awareness among children about road safety, two comic books named ‘Swachh Safar’ and ‘Surkshit Yatra’ have also been released.

Two apps named VAHAN and SARATHI have also been started, so that corruption in issuing licenses and vehicle registration can be controlled.

Under the ‘Setu Bharatam Program’, all the national highways of India will be exempted from railway crossings by the year 2019.
