National Overseas Scholarship Scheme started
- Recently the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme has been started. The Indians who got the opportunity to study from this scholarship program scheme have expressed their gratitude towards the government.
National Overseas Scholarship Scheme
- National Overseas Scholarship Scheme is a Central Sector Scheme. It facilitates low-income students belonging to scheduled castes, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes, landless agricultural laborers and traditional artisan category to pursue higher education abroad.
- The scheme provides financial assistance to selected candidates for pursuing postgraduate level courses and PhD abroad in any field of study in institutions/universities recognized by the Government or an authorized body in that country.
- In every selection year, 125 new awards will be given according to the availability of funds under this scheme.
- The scheme is being implemented by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
- Under this scheme, 30% of the awards of each year are earmarked for reservation for women candidates.
- To take advantage of this scheme, at least 60% marks or equivalent grade will have to be brought in the qualifying examination.

Meaning of Diaspora
- The word “diaspora” is derived from the Greek word diasperine, meaning “dispersal.”
- The expression has evolved over time and now refers to someone who is a citizen of a particular country and shares a common ancestry or culture, but who lives or resides outside that country for various reasons.
Classification of Overseas Indians
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) are all considered expatriates in India.
- It may be noted that PIO and OCI card holders have been merged into one category OCI in 2015.
