National Geographic recognizes ‘Southern Ocean’ as world’s 5th Ocean
The ‘Southern Ocean’ has recently been recognized by the ‘National Geographic magazine’ as the fifth ocean of the world.
Key Points:
- The Southern Ocean is the only ocean that ‘touches three other oceans and completely encircles one continent. The northern boundary of this ocean touches the latitude of 60 degrees south.
- The Southern Ocean is also defined by the Antarctic perihelion current that formed 34 million years ago. This current flows around Antarctica from west to east.
- It was also recognized by the ‘International Hydrographic Organization’ in the year 1937, but it was canceled in the year

- The International Hydrographic Organization is an intergovernmental consultative and technical organization established in 1921 to support the safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment. India is a member country of IHO.
