Mount Nyiragongo
- There is a recent eruption in Mount Nyiragongo volcano in Congo. Thousands of people are migrating from their homes due to this explosion, going to the eastern part of Rwanda to seek refuge. Mount Nyiragongo is about 20 km north of the city of Goma, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- According to people, this volcano was also erupted in 2002. At that time, according to government figures, 250 people had died, while 1 lakh 20 thousand people had become homeless.
- It is known that Mount Nyiragongo is an active strato volcano of 3,470 m altitude in the Virunga Mountains adjoining the Albertine Rift.
- This volcano is inside Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its main pit is about two kilometers wide, and it usually has a lava lake in it.
- Nyiragongo and its adjacent Nyamuragira are jointly responsible for 40 percent of historic volcanic eruptions in Africa.
Types of volcanoes
It is of three types depending on the activity
- Active
- Extinct
- Dormant
Active Volcano: A volcano is currently considered an active volcano if it is currently erupting, or is prone to eruption soon, or if it has signs of activity such as gas leaking, smoke or lava spewing, or an earthquake.
Extinct volcanoes: These are volcanoes that scientists expect will not explode. It is often difficult to determine whether a volcano is truly extinct.
Dormant volcanoes: Dormant volcanoes are volcanoes that are calm, but may erupt again. The volcano is often considered extinct if there is no written record of its activity. Nevertheless, volcanoes can remain dormant for long periods of time.
