Money spider, ant-mimicking spider at Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Money spider and ant-mimicking spider were reported for the first time from the Muthanga range of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

  • This sanctuary was established in the year 1973. It is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It was constructed with the specific objective of preserving the biological heritage of the region.
  • Kabini, a tributary of river Kaveri, flows through this sanctuary.
  • It is adjacent to the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka in the north-east and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu in the south-east.
  • The forest types here include South Indian wet deciduous forests, West Coast semi-evergreen forests and trees of teak, eucalyptus and gravilia.
  • Mammals include elephant, gaur, tiger, leopard, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, sloth bear, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque etc.
