Monarch Butterfly Migration and Overwintering
Recently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has included the migratory monarch butterfly in its Red List of Threatened Species for the first time.
The IUCN has classified it as “endangered” on this list.
It is one of the most visited butterflies in the world.
Millions of monarch butterflies make the longest migration in North America. This migration is much greater than that of any insect species known to science.
Threats: Habitat loss, increased use of herbicides and pesticides for agriculture, and climate change.
Measures to increase their numbers: Milkweed should be planted. It is a plant on which caterpillars depend.
