Recently the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) has released the report ‘Migration in India 2020-2021’.
This report is based on additional data collected for the first time on migration aspects during the annual cycle of the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) for July 2020-June 2021.
The report differentiates between ‘temporary visitors’ and ‘categories of migrants’.
Key Findings

- The migration rate (47.9%) is higher among females than among males.
- Among women, the highest level of migration rate for marriage (86.8%) is observed.
- 9% temporary visitors had shifted to visit family/relatives/friends.
- Reverse migration during the pandemic saw high unemployment rates in rural areas. This gave rise to rural distress.
