Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)
Recently 7 large field studies are being conducted under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
This field study is being done by the National Productivity Council (NPC). NPC is an autonomous organization under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
PMMSY was launched by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 2020. The objective of the scheme is to bring about Blue Revolution in the country through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector.
The scheme is being implemented in all the states and union territories for a period of 5 years from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25.
PMMSY has two components: Central Sector Scheme (CS) and Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS).
Goals of PMMSY:
- To increase the total fish production in the country to 22 million metric tonnes.
- To increase the GVA contribution of fisheries sector to 9 percent in Agriculture Gross Value Added (GVA).
- The income from fish exports is to be doubled to about Rs 1 lakh crore.
- Reducing post-harvesting losses by about 10%.
- Doubling the income of fishermen and fish farmers
- India is the third largest fish producing country in the world. In addition, it is the second largest aquaculture country after China.
Other initiatives to boost fisheries sector:
- Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) has been constituted.
- Kisan Credit Card Scheme has been started for fishermen etc.
Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana –
- Exploiting fisheries potential;
- Modernization of the value chain, post-production management and quality improvement;
- Increase fish production and productivity;
- Building a robust fisheries management and regulatory framework;
- Doubling the income of fishermen and fish farmers and generate employment opportunities;
