Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evem Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Scheme
The Prime Minister, under the Kisan Energy Security UtthanMahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, first agro-based solar power plant to produce 17 lakh units of electricity every year has been set up in Kotputli tehsil of Jaipur district of Rajasthan.
PM-KUSUM
- Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched the Pradhan MantriKisanUrja Suraksha evemUtthanMahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Scheme for farmers for installation of solar pumps and grid connected solar and other renewable power plants in the country.
- PM-KUSUM Yojana got its administrative approval in March 2019 and guidelines were framed in July 2019.
- In February 2019, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the launch of the scheme with the objective of ensuring financial support and water conservation.
- Under the budget 2020-21, the government will extend assistance to 20 lakh farmers to install single solar pumps by expanding the scheme.
- In addition to this, it will help other 1.5 million farmers in the solarizationof their grid connected pump sets.
Components of PM KUSUMYojana:
There are mainly three components of the PM KUSUM scheme under which the government has set a target of achieving additional solar capacity of 30.8 GW by 2022.
- First component – connecting 10,000 MW of decentralized grids installed on land to renewable power plants.
- Second component – Installation of 2 million solar powered agricultural pumps.
- Third component – Solarisation of 1.5 million solar powered agricultural pumps connected to the grid.
Benefits of PM-KUSUM Yojana
- This will help in improving the financial condition of DISCOMs by reducing the subsidy burden in the agriculture sector.
- Promotion of decentralized solar power generation.
- Water security to farmers, through the provision of water sources ensured by both off-grid and grid connected solar water pumps.
