Mahakal Lok corridor Phase
Recently, the first phase of ‘Mahakal Lok Corridor’ project has been inaugurated at Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain.
The Mahakal Lok Corridor project is related to the Mahakaleshwar temple and its surrounding area. This temple is located in Ujjain district (Madhya Pradesh). This is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
This corridor will provide world class modern facilities to the pilgrims visiting the temple. In this way their experience and enjoyment will increase further.
Mahakaleshwar Temple –
- According to popular beliefs, the origin of the Mahakal temple dates back to prehistoric times.
- According to the Puranas, it was first established by Lord Prajapati Brahma.
- Kalidasa in Raghuvansham has described this temple as ‘Niketan’. Moreover, in Meghdootam also Kalidasa gives a fascinating description of the Mahakal temple.
- The present five-storey structure of the temple was built by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde in 1734 AD. This structure is built in Bhumija, Chalukya and Maratha architectural styles.
- The Bhumija style is one of the oldest traditional temple architecture styles developed in Maharashtra.
- The main distinguishing feature of such temples is their star-shaped construction plan and shikhara.
- The upper parts of the temple are supported by strong and well-designed pillars and pilasters.
- The sculpture of the temple includes idols of Nataraja, Ravananugraha etc.
- This is the only south facing Jyotirlinga, whereas all other Jyotirlingas are facing east.
Jyotirlingas:
A Jyotirlinga in Hinduism is a representation of Lord Shiva. The total numbers of Jyotirlingas are 12.
Other 11 Jyotirlingas are as follows-
Somnath and Nageshwar in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna in Andhra Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar and Ghrishneshwar in Maharashtra, Vishwanath in Varanasi, Baidyanath in Jharkhand, and Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu.
