Lithium reserves found in J&K’s Reasi

Recently Geological Survey of India (GSI) has confirmed lithium inferred resource (G3) of 5.9 million tonnes in Salal – Haimana area of Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir (UT) for the first time.

  • This report along with 15 other resource geological reports (G2 and G3 phases) and 35 geological memoranda were submitted to the respective state governments during the 62nd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting held on 09 February 2023.
  • Every year, as per the approved Annual Field Season Program (FSP), GSI carries out various phases of mineral exploration.
  • Surveys are carried out following the guidelines of the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) and Mineral Evidence and Mineral Content Rules (MEMC-2015) to enhance the mineral resource for various mineral metals including Lithium and are divided into different classes,
  • Such as: Reconnaissance surveys (G4), preliminary exploration (G3) and general exploration (G2) Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and is mainly used in the battery industry.
  • Currently, India is dependent on imports for several minerals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. The government had approved the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for setting up of Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) in the country by 2021.
  • Argentina, Chile and Bolivia make up the so-called “Lithium Triangle”. Australia is the top lithium producer globally.
