India will strengthen infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)
According to a recently released parliamentary committee report, India is engaged in further improving the infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
After the Galwan incident, the infrastructure on the India-China border is being upgraded in a big way.
According to the report submitted by the parliamentary committee, the Indian government has approved the construction of 32 roads along the China border, of which work has started on eight.
32 helipads are being built on the China border, and they are being modernised.
Why is there a need to develop infrastructure on the border?
- This will ensure speedy movement of troops, armored vehicles and artillery (or artillery troops).
- This will help in curbing illegal activities (such as illegal migration, counterfeit currency etc.).
- It will help in establishing connectivity with the hinterland areas. This will create a positive perception among the people towards the security forces and the government and people will be encouraged to live in the border areas.
- This will help in reducing the threats of cross-border infiltration and cross-border extremism.
- Trade relations with neighboring countries will improve.
Measures taken by the Government for Management of Border Infrastructure:
Violent Village Programme: It has been announced to improve social and financial infrastructure mainly in remote settlements along the India-China border.
Border Infrastructure & Management: BIM
- It is an umbrella scheme of the Central Sector. The scheme is being operated to improve border management, policing and guarding of borders.
- Border Area Development Programme: It is being conducted for comprehensive border management.
Increase in the budget of Border Roads Organization:
In the Union Budget 2022-23, the capital expenditure for Border Roads Organization has been increased by a record 40 per cent as compared to FY 2021-22.
