ITF Transport Outlook 2023
The International Transport Forum (ITF) has released the Transport Outlook 2023 report at the Leipzig Transport Conference.
- The Transport Outlook Report is a biennial report. The report examines the effects of different policy measures on global transport demand and carbon dioxide emissions through the year 2050.
- The report (2023) stresses the need for decarbonisation of the transport sector. This means that investing in the necessary infrastructure for public transport will encourage the operation of transport modes with higher carrying capacity.
Key findings of report-
- Decarbonizing transport can reduce the need for investment in infrastructure such as road, rail and ports.
- If the decarbonization process of the transport sector is accelerated, the transport sector can reduce its CO2 emissions by almost 80% over the next 25 years compared to 2019.
- Turmoil in energy markets and the cost of living crisis have complicated transport sector decarbonization efforts.
Key Recommendations –
- There is a need to develop a comprehensive strategy for future mobility and infrastructure.
- There is a need to accelerate the adoption of clean fuel based vehicles by promoting alternative fuels and vehicle technologies.
- Multi-modal and sustainable transport network should be promoted.
- Target-based economic incentives should be provided to increase the use of zero-emission road vehicles. Also, movement of high-emission vehicles in cities should be prohibited.
- The current system of taxing car use through fuel excise and by introducing more distance-based pricing should be reformed.
