Italy has signed the International Solar Alliance under the amended ISA Framework Agreement.

Italy has signed an agreement with India on 17 March 2021, under this agreement; Italy wants to join International Solar Alliance.

Along with this, Ajay Mathur has been appointed as the next Director General of the International Solar Alliance.The International Solar Alliance is headed by the Director General, who handles the functions of the ISA Secretariat.

International Solar Alliance(ISA)

  • The establishment of the International Solar Alliance was announced by the Prime Minister of India, ShriNarendraModi and the former President of France, François Oland, during the 21st session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC-COP21) in Paris on 30 November 2015.
  • The ISA Framework Agreement came into force on 6 December 2017 and, with it, formally came into being as an international intergovernmental organization based on the treaty.
  • It is an international, inter-governmental organization based on mutual agreement. So far 54 countries have signed its framework agreement.
  • The Imagination of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) is a coalition of solar-resource countries located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
  • The objective of this alliance is to promote the production of solar energy thereby reducing dependence on petrol, diesel, i.e., promoting solar energy by eliminating the dependence of energy on fossil fuels.
  • The main goal of the Solar Alliance is to produce 1,000 GW of solar energy worldwide and to manage a $ 1,000 billion investment in solar energy by 2030.
  • Apart from this, its main objective is to make solar technology available to member countries and to promote research and development in this field.
  • Currently 122 countries are its members and, 87 countries have signed the ISA Framework Agreement, of which 67 have also submitted ratification documents.
  • It is headquartered in India and its interim secretariat is currently situated in Gurugram.

Significance for India:

  • It is to be noted that India has set a target of producing 100 GW of solar powered energy by 2022. Apart from this, 40% of the total energy production is to be obtained from renewable sources by 2030.
  • Investment, technology and cooperation achieved through the International Solar Alliance will prove to be important in achieving these goals.
  • This will ensure energy security, reduce dependence on traditional energy sources and promote eco-tourism.
