Islamic State Khorasan Province
- IS-K or ‘Islamic State Khorasan Province – IS-K’ is a regional affiliate of the ‘Islamic State’ group.
- It is the most extreme and violent of all jihadist terrorist organizations found in Afghanistan.
- It was founded in January 2015, when Islamic State (IS) was at the height of its power in Iraq and Syria. Later, its self-proclaimed caliphate was defeated and destroyed by a US-led coalition.
- “Khorasan” is a historical region that spanned parts of modern-day Afghanistan and Pakistan. Initially, the IS-K group was expanded in Pakistan as well, but in May 2019 the ‘Islamic State’ became a separate group in Pakistan.
