Recently Indian Professor Bimal Patel has been elected to the International Law Commission. His term will be for five years, starting from January 1, 2023. Patel is a member of the Indian National Security Advisory Board.
About the ILC
- The International Law Commission was established in the year 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly as one of its bodies. Its purpose is to promote the progressive development of international law and its codification.
- It deals mainly with public international law, but it can also hear cases in the field of private international law.
- It consists of 34 members, who are experts in international law.
