International Day of the Seafarer

International Day of the Seafarer is celebrated on 25 June.

International Sailor Day

  • This day is celebrated every year all over the world. This day is organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
  • It is noteworthy that in the year 2011, the first ‘International Day of the Seafarer’ was organized. The theme of the 2021 International Sailors Day is ‘A fair future for sailors’.

Objectives

  • About 90 percent of the world’s trade is carried out by ships and these ships are operated by seafarers, who work tirelessly to ensure the smooth flow of trade through the waters.
  • In order to recognize the invaluable contribution of seafarers to the commerce and economic system, International Day of the Seafarer is organized.
  • The campaign for International Sailor Day-2021 will focus on encouraging governments to support seafarers amid the pandemic.
  • The campaign will shed light on issues relevant to seafarers in the aftermath of the pandemic; Such as fair working conditions, fair treatment of sailors, fair security, fair training etc.
  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) calls on sailors on this day to answer the question of what a fair future looks like for sailors.

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized organization of the United Nations (UN), it was established in 1948 during the Geneva Conference.
  • It is an international standards-setting authority primarily responsible for improving the safety of international shipping.
