International Day of Girl Child

Every year 11 October is celebrated as International Day of Girl Child.

The occasion reflects the importance of teenage girls, and tries to mark their strength and potential by providing opportunities for them.

On 19 December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 11 October as International Day of the Girl Child.

Theme of ‘International Day of the Girl Child’–2021: DIGITAL GENERATION, OUR GENERATION

Beijing Declaration:

  • First of all, the rights of the girl child were identified in the ‘Beijing Declaration’ and the matter was raised for this.
  • In 1995, the participating countries at the ‘Global Conference on Women’ held in Beijing unanimously adopted the ‘Beijing Declaration’ and the Action Platform.
  • It is considered to be the most progressive framework ever to advance the rights of not only women but also girls.
  • Recently India has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2022-24. India has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2022-24 on October 14, 2021 with an overwhelming majority in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Key point:

  • The New Delhi envoy described the election as “strong support” of India’s strong roots in democracy, fundamental rights and pluralism enshrined in the Constitution.
  • This decision was taken in the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting was held for 18 new members of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
  • These new members will serve for a period of three years starting from January, 2022.

Selection of India:

India won its election by 184 votes in the 193-member assembly. The current term of India will end on 31 December 2021. There were five vacant seats in the Asia-Pacific States category up for election for the 2022–2024 term, namely Kazakhstan, Malaysia, India, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

New members:

The 193-member General Assembly elected Argentina, Cameroon, Benin, Finland, Eritrea, Honduras, The Gambia, Lithuania, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Qatar, Paraguay, UAE, Somalia and the United States by secret ballot for the term 2022-2024.

Term of office of members:

The members of the council will serve for a three-year term. They shall not be eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms.
