INS Mormugao commissioned into the Navy

  • Recently Indian Naval Ship (INS) Mormugao has been inducted into the Indian Navy.
  • Mormugao is a stealth guided missile destroyer. Its length is 163 meters and width is 17 meters.
  • It is equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. It is fitted with a modern surveillance radar, which provides target data to the weapon systems.
  • It is capable of fighting in nuclear, biological and chemical warfare situations.
  • It is operated by four powerful gas turbines. It is capable of attaining speeds of over 30 knots.
  • It is the second destroyer of the Project-15B class. Project-15B class destroyers have 72% indigenously manufactured components.
  • It is named after the historic port city of Goa on the west coast. The vessel put to sea for the first time on December 19, 2021, the day marking 60 years of the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule.
  • This indigenous warship has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited under the ‘Self-reliant India’ campaign.

Project-15B:

  • Four Guided Missile Destroyers of Project 15B (P 15B) are under construction at M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. The contract for the construction of these four ships was signed in the year 2011.
  • These ships are the world’s most technologically advanced Stealth Guided Missile Destroyers with state-of-the-art weapon/sensor packages, advanced stealth features and high degree of automation.
