Initiative Launched For Capacity Building of Cities in Ganga Basin

The initiative for capacity building to make cities water sensitive in the Ganga basin has been launched by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in collaboration with the Center for Science and Environment (CSE).

About the initiative:

  • A water sensitive city based on the idea of holistic management of the water cycle. Under this concept, basic services of water supply and sanitation will be provided while reducing the risk of floods and protecting and better maintenance of the receiving waterways.
  • This is a part of the series of efforts being undertaken by NMCG. It aims to ensure convergence of Namami Gange Mission with major urban missions at national level (AMRUT, SmartCity etc.).
  • The Namami Gange program is a comprehensive river rejuvenation program covering all the rivers of the Ganga basin to ensure Aviral Dhara (continuous flow) and Nirmal Dhara (unpolluted flow).
  • It is to be implemented in pilot cities of Ganga basin. Under this, training programmes, field visits, webinars and technical assistance will be provided for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
