Indian Universities in ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022’
Recently a record 71 Indian universities have been ranked in the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022’.
This is a significant improvement in the ranking achieved in the last 63 years. But none of them made it to the top 300 list.
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is the top ranked institute in India. Publications and citations including reputation, especially international co-authoring are key areas where India has made progress.
Higher Education Sector of India
- With 51,849 institutions and 37.6 million students, India has one of the largest higher education systems in the world.
- India aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio to 50% by 2030 from the current 27.1%.
The sector is facing various issues, such as
- Low level quality of infrastructure of institutions.
- Only 45.9% graduates are employable.
- Total education expenditure is only 3.1 percent of GDP. Out of this, only 40 percent is allocated for higher education.
Recent steps taken by the government
- The Education Quality Upgradation and Inclusion Program (EQUIP) has been launched to improve the quality and accessibility of higher education during the year 2019-2024.
- Revitalizing Infrastructure and Systems in Education (RISE) initiative is being implemented by the year 2022.
- Scheme for Transformational and Advanced Research in Science (STARS) has been launched for funding the faculty of higher education institutions for research projects in general sciences.
Other Government Steps
- An annual web based All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) was launched.
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) issues rules related to accreditation and accreditation of higher educational institutions.
- Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is being run.
