Recently, National Security Advisor (NSA), AjitDoval has commissionedthe Indian Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel Sajag into the Navy to protect maritime interests.

Key Points

  • “Sajag” is manufactured by Goa Shipyard Limited. This state-of-the-art machinery vessel of Offshore Patrol Vessel nature is indigenously manufactured for the Marine Armed Forces with latest technology sensors and equipment.

Patrol Vessel

  • It is a small naval vessel designed for coastal defense, immigration law enforcement, border security, and search and rescue operations.
  • They may be operated by the Navy, Coast Guard, police forces or customs, and commissioned for marine or estuary or riverine environments.
  • They are commonly used in border security roles such as anti-piracy, anti-smuggling, fisheries patrol and immigration law enforcement etc.

Classification of Patrol Vessel

  • Patrol vessels are classified as inshore patrol vessels (IPVs) and offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
  • These are small-sized warships, and include fast attack craft, missile boats, and torpedo boats. Offshore patrol vessels are the smallest ships in the Navy. However, they are large and moveable in the sea, which is sufficient for patrolling off the coast.
