Indian Army’s Project Udbhav
Why In News?
- Recently Defense Minister launched ‘Project UDBHAV’ during the inauguration of the Indian Military Heritage Festival. The discussion focused on “Evolution of Indian Military Systems, Warfare and Strategic Thinking: Current Research and Future Directions”.
In Terms of Project Udbhav:
- Project Udbhav is an initiative launched by the Indian Army to rediscover the deep Indian heritage of statecraft and strategic ideas derived from ancient Indian texts of statecraft, warfare, diplomacy and grand strategy.
- It focuses on the broad spectrum of indigenous military systems described in historical texts as well as regional texts and thematic studies of states and Kautilya’s Arthashastra.
Objective of Project Udbhav:
- The project aims to combine ancient knowledge with contemporary military practices, creating a unique and holistic approach to address modern security challenges.
- Another objective of Project Udbhav is to integrate age-old knowledge with contemporary military pedagogy through interdisciplinary research, workshops and leadership seminars.
- This project has been undertaken to facilitate a deeper understanding of knowledge systems and philosophy.
Other Important Facts Related to the Project Udbhav:
- Kautilya’s Arthashastra also underlines the importance of strategic partnerships, alliances and diplomacy in sync with modern military practices such as international cooperation and soft power projection.
- A project on the compilation of Indian strategies based on ancient texts has been ongoing since 2021.
- A book listing 75 aphorisms from ancient texts has been released.
- The first scholarly outcome is a 2022 publication titled “The Eternal Laws of Traditional Indian Philosophy, Politics and Leadership”.
- Thiruvalluvar’s book Thirukkural advocates ethical conduct in all endeavors, including war, which is in line with modern military codes of ethics of just war and the principles of the Geneva Conventions.
