India votes in favour of UNSC resolution to renew mandate
Recently India has voted in favor of the UNSC resolution renewing the mandate of the Executive Directorate of Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTED).
- India, has voted in favor of a resolution extending the mandate of the CTED till December 31, 2025. It is noteworthy that India will chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the year 2022.
- As Chairman of the CTC, India will do its best to further enhance the role of the CTC in strengthening the multilateral response to counter terrorism.
- India will also ensure that the global response to the threat of terrorism remains clear, undivided and effective.
- CTED was established in the year 2004 through UNSC resolution 1535. It is an expert body supporting the Anti-Terrorism Committee (CTC).
- CTED visits member countries on behalf of the Anti-Terrorism Committee to assess the counter-terrorism efforts of member states. This assessment includes progress made, shortfalls remaining, priority areas relating to technical support requirements, etc.
- The CTC was established by UNSC resolution 1373 (year 2001). The resolution was related to the implementation of measures that enhance the legal and institutional capacity of all UNSC member states to combat terrorist activities domestically, in their respective territories and around the world.

India’s other counter-terrorism measures at the international level:
Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF): It is an action-oriented forum outside the framework of the United Nations. Its objective is to promote effective multilateral cooperation to combat terrorism.
Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF): Its goal is to enhance the coordination and coherence of counter-terrorism efforts of the United Nations system.
United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy: A uniquely global instrument to enhance national, regional and international efforts to counter terrorism.
