India organizes the year 2023 session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
Recently India will organize the year 2023 session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
- This session will be held in Mumbai. India will host the session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the second time. The first session of the IOC in India was held in New Delhi in the year 1983.
- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established in the year 1894. It is a non-profit independent international organization.
- The headquarter of IOC is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is completely dependent on private funding. It distributes 90 percent of its revenues to comprehensive sports activities for the development of sports and athletes at all levels.
- It is represented by the President of the IOC. He presides over all its activities. The IOC President is selected by session. The IOC session discusses and decides on the major activities of the global Olympic events. These activities also include the adoption or amendment of the Olympic Charter. The decisions taken by it are final.
- Normally the session of the IOC is held once a year. But the session may be held at any time by the Speaker or on the written request of not less than one-third of the members.
- In India, hosting the IOC session is seen as a step towards the long-term goal of hosting the Olympic Games in India.
Arguments in favor of hosting the Olympic Games: Host cities of such massive sporting events become rich with civic amenities infrastructure and state-of-the-art sports facilities. This encourages tourism. The host nation of these games emerges as a major global power.
Arguments against Hosting: The cost of hosting these games is high. In addition, the high-cost facilities built during the Olympics are of limited use afterwards.
