India Mauritius Relations
Recently India has initiated various infrastructure and development projects in Mauritius.
India inaugurated a social housing project in Mauritius. In addition, the foundation stone of a civil service college and an 8 MW solar PV farm project was also laid.
India and Mauritius also signed two agreements. Under one of these, India will provide a line of credit (LoC) of $190 million to Mauritius for the Metro Express project and other infrastructure projects. In the second MoU on implementation of small development projects will be exchanged.
India Mauritius Relations
- People of Indian origin constitute about 70% of the population of Mauritius.
- The two countries had signed the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) in the year 2021.
- The two countries have also signed security agreements. These also included the transfer of a Dornier aircraft and an advanced light helicopter, Dhruv.
- India had given a grant of $353 million to Mauritius in the year 2016 as a special economic package. The objective was to complete the priority projects.
- Mauritius has a special place in India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. The ‘Sagar’ vision is based on the creation of a secure regional framework.
- Mauritius is located close to important sea routes of communication to the West Asian oil fields.
Challenges in India-Mauritius Relations:
China’s growing presence and influence in the Indian Ocean region, round-tripping of investments into India through Mauritius, etc.
