India-Italy Relations

Recently India and Italy have agreed to elevate their relations to strategic partnership.

India and Italy are celebrating the 75th anniversary of their bilateral relations. The two countries have decided to elevate their ties to a ‘strategic partnership’ amid growing mutual political, economic and strategic interests.

Earlier, India and Italy adopted the 2020-24 Action Plan for Better Partnership. Also, a strategic partnership was launched in the area of energy transition.

Key results of bilateral talks –

  • Both nations have agreed to strengthen defense cooperation through co-development and co-production in India.
  • Also, it has been agreed to conduct regular exercises and training courses between the armed forces.
  • The establishment of a start-up bridge between India and Italy has been announced.
  • Declaration of Intent (DOI) on migration and movement has been signed.
  • It aims to strengthen people-to-people ties by establishing migration and movement partnerships.
  • Italy has joined the pillar of the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) – ‘Science, Technology and Academic Cooperation’.
  • IPOI was launched by India at the East Asia Summit in 2019. It is an open global initiative for the management, conservation, sustainability and security of the marine sphere.
  • IPOI has been set up to take forward the Security and Growth for All (SAGAR) initiative of India in the region. IPOI has 7 pillars.
