India allows private companies to set up rocket launch sites within and outside the country
Recently, under the National Space Transportation Policy (NSTP, 2020) brought out by the Department of Space (DOS), private companies will be allowed to set up and operate rocket launch sites within and outside the country.
The objective of NSTP is to harness the potential of the space sector in the country with respect to space transportation systems. Also, it covers all aspects of rocket launching, launch pads and re-entry of space objects.
Main criteria for launch sites
- Any rocket launch (orbital or sub-orbital) from Indian or foreign territory can be done only after approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).
- IN-SPACe is an independent body under DOS to assist, encourage and guide private industry in space activities.
- Launching from outside the territory of India would require approval as per the laws applicable to the respective nation/territory.
- Launches can take place either on their own or from a leased launch site, and from a mobile platform (land, sea or air).
Importance of this step
- To help Indian institutions develop capacity and capability in the space transport system.
- Harnessing the commercial potential of small satellite launch services.
- To focus on advanced research and technology development to improve access to space, and to support human/robotic space exploration.
