India adds approximately 4.5 GW solar capacity in Apr-Jun 2021

India added 2,488 MW of solar in the second quarter or Q2 of the calendar year 2021. The installations were up 1,114 percent year-over-year compared to 205 MW added in Q2 2020 when COVID crippled the sector.

Prior to this, the share of solar power in India’s installed power capacity mix reached 10.3%. It is known that this was the first time more than wind-based energy sources.

Initiatives taken by the Government to promote Solar Energy:

National Solar Mission

  • Sustainable Rooftop Implementation for Solar Transfiguration of India (SRISTI) for promotion of rooftop solar power projects in India.
  • Suryamitra Skill Development Programme to prepare a qualified workforce.
  • Development of solar parks and ultra-mega solar power projects.
  • Grid Connected Solar Rooftop Program.
  • PM-KUSUM Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan.
  • AJAY (Atal Jyoti Yojana).
  • Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) for large energy consumer customers.

International Initiatives:

  • International Solar Alliance (ISA) It was started by India and France as potential members to meet the energy needs of 121 solar resource rich countries located wholly or partially between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
  • One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) initiative was proposed by India at the ISA Forum.
