Question – Point out the important teachings of Swami Vivekananda, which are relevant to the youth of today. – 11 February 2022
Answer – The philosophy and ideals of Swami Vivekananda, which Swamiji imbibed in his life, are a great source of inspiration for today’s youth. He wanted the countrymen, including the youth, to have ‘iron muscles’, ‘steel nerves’ and a ‘thunderbolt-like brain’. Swami Vivekananda found a high ideal of liberation of man in his philosophical thought.
Certain teachings relevant to the youth are as under:
Character Building: He believed that the youth of the country had the key to solve the various problems faced by India. According to him, every human being can guide himself (self-creation) with his own potential, and at the same time play an active role in society. This emphasis on individual ability is relevant for youth to develop their skills and make a mark for themselves.
Education and Society: Vivekananda gave great importance to the role of education in the formation of society. He believed that Indian society had its own basic characteristics like “Guru-Shishya Parampara” etc. from the very beginning, which should be maintained at any cost.
Philanthropy and Service to Mankind: Vivekananda once said, “As long as millions of people live in hunger and ignorance, I consider every person a traitor.” Such call inspired the youth to serve the suffering humanity. It is relevant to the youth, as it will encourage the spirit of social service, philanthropy and humanism.
Spirit of National Awakening: He wanted the youth who would eventually become leaders, contribute to the national awakening, preach and teach the eternal spiritual truth of our ancestors. With his messages of “Arise, Awake and Stop not till the goal are achieved”, he called upon the youth to inculcate the spirit of nationalism.
Universal Tolerance: His famous speech at the World Parliament of Religions emphasizes universal tolerance. This teaching is important for youth in a highly polarized global world order.
Swami Vivekananda was born in the late 19th century but his thoughts and philosophy of life are highly relevant in today’s era. A great man like Vivekananda lives even after death, and becomes immortal, and continues to inspire people with his thoughts and teachings for centuries. At present, the world is moving towards protectionism and fundamentalism, from which India is also no exception. Vivekananda’s nationalism inspires not only internationalism but also humanism. Simultaneously, Vivekananda’s concept of religion is very useful for connecting people, as this concept emphasizes the universal principle of Indian culture. If the world follows the principle of equality of all religions, then two-thirds of the world’s problems and violence can be prevented. A large number of Indians are still forced to live in poverty and the problems of marginalized communities still persist. If Vivekananda’s concept of “Daridranarayan” is realized, then inequality, poverty, inequality, untouchability etc. can be dealt with without using force and the concept of an ideal society can be realized.
