How to Become an IAS Officer ? Step by Step guide

Step 1 : Complete your education To become an IAS officer, you must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. There is no specific degree required for this, but most candidates choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in fields like economics, history, political science, or public administration.
Step 2 : Prepare for the Civil Services Examination The Civil Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year to select candidates for the IAS, IPS, and other civil services. The exam has three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview. The Preliminary exam is an objective type test, while the Main exam is a subjective type test.
You can prepare for the exam by joining a coaching institute or by self-study. It is recommended that you start your preparation at least one year before the exam.

Step 4 : Clear the Preliminary Exam The Preliminary exam consists of two papers: General Studies and Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). Step 5 : Clear the Main Exam The Main exam consists of nine papers, out of which seven are compulsory and two are optional. The papers include subjects like essay writing, general studies, and language papers. You need to clear the cut-off marks in each paper to qualify for the Interview round.
Step 6 : Clear the Interview The Interview is the final stage of the selection process.
