Guidelines to Provide Framework for Sharing of Biological Data

Recently the Government of India has issued guidelines to provide a framework for the sharing of biological data.

  • The Biotech-PRIDE Guidelines, the first of its kind, aim to provide a framework and guidelines to facilitate and enable the sharing and exchange of biological knowledge, information and data.
  • Biotech Pride data will encourage research and innovation through data exchange.
  • It will be implemented through the Indian Biological Data Center (BDC), the first national repository of life science data in India.
  • Its mandate is to collect nationally generated and publicly funded life science data.
  • Other existing datasets and data centers will be linked to the IBDC, which will be called Bio-Grid.

Significance:

  • To harmonize and coordinate the sharing of data for research and analysis and to promote the same and to promote scientific work.
  • It will contribute to fundamental research on human health, agriculture, animal husbandry, etc., to expand the understanding of molecular and biological processes and promote progress based on previous research.
  • Avoid wastage of resources on duplication and research.
  • The guidelines being prepared by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) will be in line with the principles of National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP) to protect ‘privacy and confidentiality’ and the quality of biological data.
