GSAT-24 launched by New Space India Limited (NSIL)
Recently ‘New Space India Limited’ (NSIL) has launched GSAT-24.
The launch of GSAT-24 is the first launch of the organization’s “demand-driven” communications satellite mission after reforms in the space sector.
Space reforms were announced in the year 2020. Under these reforms, NSIL was entrusted with the task of launching operational satellite missions on a ‘demand driven’ model.
The ‘demand-driven’ model basically means that, when a satellite is launched, a firm knows who its end customers are. Also how it will be used, and what is the commitment.
Earlier, a more ‘supply driven’ model was used. In this, satellite capability was leased after launch. Usually no full commitment was made by the customers in advance.
The GSAT-24 satellite for NSIL has been built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
This satellite has been launched from Kourou in French Guiana (South America). The satellite has been successfully placed in geostationary orbit by the Ariane-5 rocket operated by the French company Ariane Space.
The entire satellite capability of GSAT-24 will be leased to its committed customer – Tata Play. Tata Play is a Direct to Home (DTH) business of the Tata Group.
The entire mission is fully funded by NSIL. This includes satellite launches, launch missions, insurance, transportation, in-orbit maintenance and support. Once the satellite is placed in orbit, it will be wholly owned and operated by NSIL.
