Global Nutrition Report : GNR 2021 Released

Recently the Global Nutrition Report (GNR) 2021 has been released.

The Global Nutrition Report provides a leading and independent assessment of the global nutritional status. This is a data based report. It is issued annually to highlight progress and challenges.

Key findings:

  • None of the regions are following the recommendations made for a healthy diet.
  • The financial cost of ending malnutrition is increasing. However, the total economic benefits to society from investing in nutrition could reach US$5.7 trillion per year by 2030.
  • Nutrition for Development (NAG) is a global effort. This effort brings together all stakeholders, to accelerate progress to tackle inadequate diet and all forms of malnutrition. N4G should be leveraged by the decision makers.

Conclusion with respect to India:

  • India has not made any progress on anemia and child thinning. It is known that 53% of Indian women suffer from anemia and 17.3% of children below 5 years of age are affected by thinness.
  • India is on track to achieve the goal of stunting, especially in children who are dependent on breastfeeding and overweight.
  • 7% of children under the age of 5 suffer from Stunting.
  • On the other hand 1.6% of children below 5 years of age suffer from the problem of overweight.
  • Stunting is defined as being of short height for age.
  • India has made limited progress towards achieving the targets set for dietary non-communicable diseases.
