G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers issue Communiqué after Sapporo meeting
Recently a meeting of climate and environment ministers of G7 countries has been held in Sapporo, Japan.
Key Findings:
- In this meeting, the G7 countries underlined the urgent need to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHC) emissions by about 43 percent by 2030 and 60 percent by 2035.
- They have set a target of reducing excess plastic pollution to zero by 2040. This target has been carried forward by a decade.
- G7 members have pledged to collectively increase offshore wind power capacity to 150 gigawatts by 2030 and solar power capacity to more than 1 terawatt.
- The G7 will accelerate the phasing out of unabated fossil fuels. This will enable the goal of net zero emissions in energy systems to be achieved by 2050.
- Fossil fuel consumption in plants without carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology is classified as “unbattered” fossil fuel.
Group of Seven (G7)
- It is an informal organization of major industrialized nations. These are the nations which are in hegemonic position in the global trade and international financial system.
- It holds annual meetings to discuss issues such as global economic governance, international security and energy policy. Apart from this, it also discusses other important issues related to the current situation.
- Members: USA, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
- The European Union is not a member of the G7, but participates in the annual summit.
- The G7 countries account for 46 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP).
