Forum for Decarbonizing Transport in India
Recently, NITI Aayog and World Resource Institute (WRI) India jointly launched ‘Forum for Decarbonizing Transport’ in India.
- It is a part of the Nationally Determined Contribution-Transport Initiative for Asia: NDC-TIA project.
- NDC-TIA is a joint program of ‘7 organizations’. It will include China, India and Vietnam with the aim of facilitating an ideal transition towards zero-emissions transport across Asia.
- The project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). NITI Aayog is its implementation partner for India.
- It is to be known that the transport sector is the third largest CO2 emitting sector in India.
Major measures taken towards decarbonization:
- The emphasis is on adopting Transformative Electric Vehicles (EVS) through the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage.
- Production-linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been introduced for the automobile and auto-component industry for manufacturing and development of advanced cell chemicals, battery storage.
- The Rapid Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric (and Hybrid) Vehicles Scheme (FAME) India scheme has been implemented.
- A target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol has been set by the year 2025.
Key challenges related to lithium-ion batteries powering EVs:
- Risk of overheating and damage at high voltage.
- The capacity of such batteries tends to deplete over time.
- It takes longer to charge them.
- Import dependence for lithium, which is limited to the lithium-triangle (Chile, Bolivia and Argentina).
