Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid elected next General Assembly President
Recently, Abdullah Shahid was elected the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly. At present Abdullah Shahid is the Foreign Minister of Maldives.

- Abdullah Shahid got 143 votes out of a total of 191 votes in the 193-member General Assembly. He will now preside over the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly starting in September. His main rival for the presidency was Dr. Zalmay Rasool, the former Foreign Minister of Afghanistan.
- It is to be noted that the President of the 76th session of the General Assembly was to be elected from a group of Asia-Pacific states. Before Abdullah Shahid, the President of the General Assembly was Volkan Bozkir of Turkey.
