Country’s first greenfield grain-based ethanol plant: Purnia, Bihar

Recently India’s first greenfield grain-based ethanol plant has started functioning in Bihar.

This is the first plant after the Union Government approved Bihar’s Ethanol Production and Promotion Policy-2021.

Ethanol production will help in reducing the cost of petrol and generate employment.

This ethanol plant is built using latest technology. This plant will not emit any waste.

Thus it will become a zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) plant. Thus it will become completely eco-friendly.

Zero liquid discharge: ZLD

  • It is an engineering based method of water treatment. Under this, all the water present in the waste is recovered and the contaminants remain only as solid waste.
  • For this water treatment technology is used. This technology treats the waste water and collects the contaminants at one place.

Generations of Biofuels –

Generations of biofuels are defined on the basis of the raw materials used in its production:

  • First Generation Bio-ethanol: It uses a mixture of maize seeds and sugarcane.
  • Second Generation Bio-ethanol: The non-edible agricultural waste left after harvest is used.
  • Third Generation Bio-ethanol: Microorganisms are used.
  • Fourth Generation Bio-ethanol: This generation biofuel is the result of developments in plant biology and biotechnology (metabolic engineering) in the field of carbon capture and storage technology.
