NATO is a military alliance. It consists of 30 member countries from North America (2) and Europe (28).

Its fundamental purpose is to protect the independence and sovereignty of the Allies by political and military means.

It was established in the year 1949 by the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty.

According to Article 5 of the treaty, if a member country is attacked by a foreign country with an armed force, it shall be deemed an attack against all members. Other member states will assist the attack victim nation with armed forces if necessary.
