Final submarine of Project-75 INS Vagsheer
Recently, sea trials of Vagsheer, the sixth Scorpene submarine built under Project-75, have begun.
The submarine will now undergo extensive trials at sea of all its systems, including propulsion systems, weapons and sensor trials.
INS Vagsheer
- INS Vagsheer is named after a predatory sandfish found in the Indian Ocean.
- It is built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai.
- This submarine has the capability to attack the enemy with torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles, underwater or on the surface.
- It has better stealth features like advanced acoustic absorption technologies. It makes very little noise, as well as is capable of delivering deadly attacks on the enemy through guided weapons.
- This submarine will be inducted into the Indian Navy in the year 2024 after completion of the trial.
- Earlier, the submarine Vagshir received from Russia was inducted into the Indian Navy in the year 1974 and was decommissioned in 1997.
Project-75 (India) Submarine Acquisition Project
- Project-75 involves the indigenous construction of six submarines of the Scorpene design.
- The submarines built under Project 75 will be equipped with weapons, advanced sensors, an air independent propulsion plant based on fuel cells and advanced missiles.
- These submarines are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai in collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
- Under Project-75, the first submarine INS Kalvari was commissioned in December 2017, second submarine INS Khanderi in September 2019, the third submarine INS Karanj in March 2021, the fourth INS Vela in November 2021 and the fifth submarine INS Vagir in January 2023.
