Fears of Russian attack on Ukraine
Recently it is being speculated that Ukraine is preparing to attack by Russia.
The United States, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Ukrainian officials have reported unusual Russian military movements near Ukraine. This has raised concerns about a Russian attack.
Currently, Ukraine is one of NATO’s six Advanced Opportunity Partners (along with Australia, Finland, Georgia, Jordan and Sweden).
Russia sees Ukraine’s entry into NATO as a threat to itself.
Background
- The Russia-Ukraine crisis started in the year 2014.
- Since November 2014, a fierce conflict between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian separatists in the two breakaway regions has continued, following Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region.
- In 2015, an open potential conflict was averted after the Minsk Peace Accords were signed under the mediation of France and Germany.
- The agreement was designed to end conflict in rebel areas and hand over the border to Ukrainian national troops.
- These separatist regions were to be delegated more power by Ukraine, constitutional reforms were to be introduced and their special status was to be codified.
- Earlier, India had voted against a resolution sponsored by Ukraine in the United Nations. The resolution condemned alleged human rights violations in Crimea. Thus India supported its old ally Russia.
