Recently the 16^th meeting of the European Council was held. Prime Minister of India NarendraModi has also participated in this meeting.

This year, at the European Council, Portugal hosted a meeting of the leaders of the ‘Indo-European Union’. Portugal is currently the chairman of the European Council Group.

Key Points of Talks:

During this, Indian Prime Minister held a meeting with other government heads of EU members. In this, all countries exchanged views on COVID-19, emphasizing on sustainable and inclusive development.
In this meeting, the free trade agreement between India and the European Union is also discussed. In addition, agreements related to geographical indication and investment protection have also been made.
Investment protection is to “Europeanize” the agreements that India has entered into with individual member countries so far.
The European Union discussed the COVID-19 vaccine in the context of the TRIPS exemption during this meeting.TRIPS stand for Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. Recently the US agreed to the deal.

Pact on pandemic

Recently about 25 member countries of the European Union want to sign a “COVID-19 pandemic treaty” with the WHO, which aims to focus on getting the global community vaccinated as soon as possible. This treaty has also been discussed during the meeting.
