Endosulfan Pesticide Case
The Supreme Court (SC) has directed the Kerala government to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to each victim of the toxic pesticide Endosulfan.
About Endosulfan
- It is an organochlorine biocide. It is used to control insects and mites by producing neurotoxic effects.
- It is sprayed on crops like cotton, cashew, fruit, tea, paddy and tobacco etc.
- It was banned in 2011 by the Supreme Court and under the Stockholm Convention on Sustainable Organic Pollutants.
- A complete ban was also imposed on alachlor, dichlorvos, trichlorfon, phosphomidone, methyl parathion, phorate and triazophos with effect from December 2020.
