Emerging threats of cyber security
Recently, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology has informed the Parliament about the emerging threat of cyber security.
According to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), there have been over 6.07 lakh cyber security incidents in the first six months of 2021. Of these, about 12,000 incidents were related to government organisations.
It may be noted that CERT-In is under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MotY). It is a nodal agency to monitor and control cyber security threats in India.
Issues related to cyber security in India:
- Lack of adequate human resources and R&D.
- Uncoordinated cyber security framework.
- Imported electronics / information technology products.
- Inadequate budgetary allocation.
Efforts made by the government:
- Computers, computer systems, computer networks and the use of data and information in electronic formats are regulated by the ‘Information Technology Act, 2000’.
- The National Cyber Policy, 2013 has been implemented to establish a secure cyber system.
- The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Center has been established for the protection and resilience of critical information infrastructure.
- The “Cyber Safe India” initiative was launched in the year 2018. Its aim is to create awareness about cyber crime.
- The National Cyber Security Coordination Center (NCCC) has been established.
- A Cyber Sanitation Center has also been set up.
