Draft Drone Rules, 2021: Ministry of Civil Aviation

Recently, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has released the draft of the Drone Rules, 2021.

The Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Rules, 2021, issued on 12 March 2021, will be replaced by the Drone Rules, 2021.

  • These rules were notified by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in March 2021. These aim to encourage the use of drones for various commercial and security purposes. At the same time, a regulatory framework is also to be established for the purpose of outlining the dos and don’ts for the users.
  • Drone is a popular term for unmanned aircraft (UA). It is an aircraft that operates without a pilot.
  • The new Drone Rules, 2021 aim to enable more types of unmanned aircraft operating scenarios. At the same time, the unmanned aviation industry aims to enhance ease of compliance and ensure safety and security.
  • The recent incident at the IAF station in Jammu has focused attention on the security and defense risks associated with drone operations.

Features of Draft Drone Rules, 2021:

  • Approvals: Abolish the need for various approvals, certificate of maintenance, including certificate of conformance, import clearance, operator permit, acceptance of existing drones, authorization of Research and development organization and student remote pilot license.
  • The Digital Sky platform will be developed as a business-friendly single-window online system. There will be minimal human intervention and most of the permissions will be granted on their own.
  • No security clearance is required before any registration or issuance of license.
