Recently Dholavira in Gujarat has been included in the World Heritage List of UNSECO
- Dholavira, located near the Rann of Kutch, was discovered by the Archaeological Survey of India.
- It was discovered under the supervision of Padmashree RS Bisht and the local people call it Kota da Timba.
- This place is associated with the Harappan civilization. The Harappan Civilization was between 3000 B.C. to 1500 B.C.
- Dholavira is included in the grand cities of his period, which is located in the island ‘Khadir’ situated in the middle of ‘Rann of Kutch’.
- In the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNSECO, it was decided to give the tag of World Heritage Site to Dholavira.
- According to UNSECO, World Heritage status is given to any such heritage, which is of cultural and natural importance.
About Dholavira:
- Dholavira is an archaeological site located in Bhachau taluka of Kutch district in the state of Gujarat, India.
- The remains and ruins of the Indus Valley Civilization are found at Dholavira and it was one of the largest known cities of that civilization. Geographically it is located on the Khadirbet Island within the Kutch Desert Wild Sanctuary extending on the Rann of Kutch.
- The town was spread over a quadrilateral area of 47 hectares (120 acres). From Basti there is Mansar water stream in the north and Manhar stream in the south, which flow only in few months of the year. The population here started around 2650 BC and started decreasing after 2100 BC.
- New research indicates that, even earlier than estimated, people began to settle here as early as 3500 BC and continued to be populated until 1800 BC.
- Dholavira was counted among the busiest metropolis in the world five thousand years ago.
UNESCO:
- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a constituent body of the United Nations.
- Its task is to promote international peace through education, nature and social science, culture and communication.
- This special institution of the United Nations was formed on 16 November 1945.
- The purpose of this organization is to establish peace and security through international cooperation of education and culture, so that there is a global consensus for justice, rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
