DHARA (Driving Holistic Action for Urban Rivers) Conference

Recently the Union Minister of Jal Shakti has inaugurated the DHARA-2023 conference in Pune.

  • DHARA stands for Driving Holistic Action for Urban Rivers.
  • The event is an annual meeting of River Cities Alliance (RCA) members, being organized by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in Pune from 13 to 14 February.
  • DHARA 2023 is being organized for the Municipal Commissioners of the member cities to initiate an in-depth discussion and come up with possible learning solutions for urban river management.
  • Established in 1976, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) is India’s leading national think tank on urban planning and development.
  • DHARA 2023 aims to inspire River Cities Alliance members to engage in progressive actions for urban river management in their cities.

River Cities Alliance: RCA

  • River Cities Alliance (RCA) started with 30 cities in 2021 and currently has 95 cities as members across India.
  • RCA was launched by Union Jal Shakti Minister on November 2021 as a dedicated platform for river cities in India to brainstorm, discuss and exchange information for sustainable management of urban rivers.
  • The River Cities Alliance, the first of its kind in the world, marks a successful partnership of two ministries, namely, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
  • The Alliance focuses on three broad themes – Networking, Capacity Building and Technical Support.
