Defense Industrial Corridor in Uttar Pradesh by BrahMos Aerospace
Recently, BrahMos Aerospace has submitted a proposal to set up a facility at the Lucknow node of the Defense Industrial Corridor in Uttar Pradesh.
- BrahMos (named after two rivers Brahmaputra and Moskva) Aerospace is a joint venture of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India and NPO Mashinostroeyenia (NPOM) of Russia. BrahMos Aerospace has submitted a proposal to set up a modern facility for the BrahMos missile project in the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor.
- BrahMos is an air-to-surface supersonic cruise missile. Its flight range is about 300 km.
Defense Industrial Corridors: DICs
- DIC refers to a route or path on which domestic production of defense equipment is carried out by the public sector, private sector and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) located at selected locations. These are aimed at enhancing the operational capability of the defense forces.
- These corridors intersect with existing defense public sector companies to ensure better connectivity between various defense industrial units.
- The government has made two such corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Importance of DICs:
- These corridors will reduce the import of defense equipment and boost the export of these equipment to other countries.
- According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report, 2021, India ranks second in the list of arms importing countries.
- These will help in achieving self-reliance in the defense sector. It will also create direct and indirect employment opportunities. These will also encourage the growth of private domestic manufacturers, MSMEs and startups.
